Obituary

Emeritus Professor Christopher Holdsworth, remembered fondly by many members as a former chairman of this society, passed away on Saturday, 1 April.  Christopher attended Clare College, Cambridge, and Oriel College, Oxford, where his PhD dissertation was on the Cistercian monastery at Forde Abbey.  His research interests focused on religious life in the twelfth century and he became the leading scholar on St Bernard of Clairvaux.  In 1977 Christopher came to Exeter when he was appointed Professor of Medieval History and seven years later was later elected chairman of the Department of History & Archaeology.  During his career Christopher served as President or Vice President of the Royal Historical Society, Society of Antiquaries, Ecclesiastical History Society and the Devon History Society.  A memorial service will take place in Exeter this summer and further details will be posted on this website.
